Highly pathogenic avian influenza

These maps show the worldwide distribution of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), serotype H5N1 reported in human and animals from 2004- 2008. Human cases are expressed in graduated symbols, and animal outbreaks are represented in graduated colour.

Initially, animal outbreaks were reported largely from East Asia and South East Asia, when concurrently Thailand and Vietnam reported human infect cases of HPAI serotype H5N1. The animal outbreaks then gradually spread to Russia and some parts of Europe, while human cases remained localised in Asia and South East Asia. In 2006, H5N1 animal outbreaks were first reported in Africa, and the virus had almost intruded the entire Europe, including Scandinavian countries like Denmark and Sweden. In 2007-2008, animal outbreaks continued across Asia, Europe and some parts of Africa. Between 2006 and 2008, human cases were reported across East Asia, South East Asia, South Asia and Africa..
