It has been more than 40 years since the first HIV cases were reported in the early 1980s. Potent and effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) is now the cornerstone for minimising HIV-related morbidity and mortality, and for suppressing the transmission risk.

In 2024, the estimated global number of people living with HIV (PLWH) was 40.8 million, including 1.3 million new infections, with 31.6 million people on ART (77% coverage among PLWH). Compared to 2010 (the baseline global targets), the annual number of HIV-related deaths in 2024 was 54% lower, and new infections was 40% less.

Geographically, the coverage of ART and the reduction of HIV-related deaths (2024 vs. 2010) were uneven, but there was a consistent pattern of reduced HIV-related deaths and higher ART coverage. The bivariate choropleth map shows that no reporting countries are in the class of a high (above 80%) ART coverage but an increase in deaths. In 2024, around 60% of the reporting countries have achieved 40-79% ART coverage, and almost 90% reported a reduction in annual deaths, compared with 2010 (countries in yellow for <20% reduction, and in green for 20% or more reduction). Most reporting countries in Africa are either in green or mint green, illustrating high ART coverage and a reduction of annual deaths. However, the areas in red, such as Sudan, Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, had less than 40% ART coverage and increased deaths, suggesting the need for urgent scale-up of ART provision.

1 December is World AIDS Day, the day that we commemorate and raise public awareness of HIV and AIDS. Continuous support from the communities is important to sustain the achievements that have been made in the past decades.
