Chikungunya Fever is a mosquito-borne infectious disease. Caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), the disease is characterised by fever and joint pain, though it could be mildly symptomatic and self-limiting.

Globally, over 180,000 cases were reported in the first 3 quarters of 2025. Major outbreaks have occurred in countries in Southeast Asia, Africa, South America and even in Europe.

In Hong Kong, CHIKV infections are largely results of importation. In 2025, 53 imported cases have been reported through 4 November, 44 with travel history in Chinese Mainland (blue circle on the inset map) where a major outbreak involving over 15,000 people has been reported since July 2025.

In October and early November, 3 patients without travel history were reported in Hong Kong, signifying the emergence of local transmission in the territory. The first two local cases (red circles labelled local 1 and local 2 on map) were epidemiologically linked, sharing the activity areas within the flight range of Aedes albopictus. The distribution of the imported (resident locations of reported imported cases in October in black circles) and local CHIKV infection cases is widespread, bearing no specific relationship with mosquito burden indicated by the Gravitrap Index (distribution of Aedes albopictus in 4 levels, with level 1 for being non-extensive and level 2 for fairly extensive on the map).

The main precautionary measures for CHIKV infection focus on the mosquito (Aedes albopictus in Hong Kong) vector: prevention of accumulation of stagnant water in the environment, and individual protection with use of insect repellents.

Data for the map were extracted from website of Centre for Health Protection, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
