World Hepatitis Day is set on the 28th of July. The goal of this day is to raise global awareness of viral hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Since 2011, each year's World Hepatitis Day has focused on a specific theme. “Find the Missing Millions” is the theme for 2019. It is because 9 out of 10 people living with viral hepatitis are unaware of their status. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a blood-borne infection but mother-to-child transmission is the most common way to spread the virus. In Asia and the Pacific, the prevalence of hepatitis B is especially high in the Pacific Islands, including Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

The map shows the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B infection, defined by longstanding positive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), in the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region in 2018. The positive rate of HBsAg varied from 0.7% (Malaysia) to 18.8% (Solomon Islands). Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect the uninfected individual against HBV.

Data for this map were obtained from the WHO regional hepatitis data.

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is an infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Acute infection can be asymptomatic, though rare cases of fulminant hepatitis may also occur. Over 90% of adults recover completely from HBV infection and do not become chronically infected, but children who have HBV infection are more likely to become a chronic carrier.

How does it spread?

The routes of Hepatitis B transmission are: Blood contact, perinatal transmission and sexual contact.

Vaccine?

A complete course of hepatitis B vaccination normally takes a total of three injections. The second dose is normally given one month after the first one, and the third dose is given 5 months after the second one.
